Ribera del Duero wines

Caleruega is located in the north-western corner of the Ribera del Duero Designation of Origin, which covers 118 municipalities spread across the provinces of Burgos, Valladolid, Soria and Segovia. This town is notable both for its valuable historical legacy and cultural heritage, and for its exceptional conditions for growing grapes.
The Barón de Ley Group has found this enclave to be the ideal place to shape its new project in this prestigious appellation: Coto de Caleruega, a proposal born from the freshness and elegance of Ribera del Duero.

D.O. Ribera del Duero

“The Ribera del Duero Designation of Origin, officially recognised on 21 July 1982, has a thousand-year-old wine-growing tradition”
Vine cultivation in the region dates back to Roman times, as evidenced by archaeological remains found at sites such as Pintia, in Padilla de Duero. During the Middle Ages, this activity gained new momentum thanks to the monastic orders of Cluny and Cistercian, which not only expanded the area under cultivation but also introduced techniques such as clonal selection and rudimentary ageing methods. Over the centuries, the knowledge passed down from generation to generation, combined with an extreme climate and diverse soils, has shaped a solid and authentic wine-growing culture. Today, this legacy positions Ribera del Duero as one of the most recognised and prestigious appellations in Spanish wine.

The Ribera del Duero D.O. is characterised by an extreme continental climate with dry summers and long winters, low rainfall and large temperature variations. Its soils, mainly clayey, limestone and stony, are located at an altitude of between 720 and over 1,000 metres above sea level. These weather conditions allow the grapes used to make Ribera del Duero wines to ripen slowly and completely, giving them exceptional quality.

The Ribera del Duero D.O. covers 26,123 hectares of carefully cultivated vineyards, distributed across several provinces of Castile and León. Of this total area, the province of Burgos stands out in particular, accounting for nearly 70% of the registered vineyards. Its plantations include red grape varieties such as Tempranillo (its main variety, also known as Tinto Fino or Tinta del País), Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec and Garnacha Tinta. Among the white varieties, the main authorised variety is Albillo Mayor.

Qualities of
Ribera del Duero wines

The unique weather and terrain conditions of this appellation give Ribera del Duero wines their intensity and aromatic complexity, as well as their body and personality. Among the key factors that influence the quality of these wines are:
Extreme continental climate with sharp temperature contrasts between day and night.
Wide temperature range that favours slow and balanced ripening of the grapes.
The altitude of the vineyards, which brings freshness and elegance to the aromatic and flavour profile.
The richness and diversity of the soils, which generate different nuances depending on the growing area, enhancing the expression of the terroir.
These natural conditions result in wines with remarkable colour concentration, good acidity, powerful on the palate and with firm but polished tannins.

A Ribera del Duero red wine, such as Coto de Caleruega Roble, combines aromas of wild fruits, balsamic or mineral notes, with the subtle touch of spices provided by barrel ageing.
